2021.12.07 22:27 GrantSRobertson Command line file redirection of stdin and stdout (using < and >) seems to be an all or nothing proposition.

In testing out how to do command line file redirection within Visual Studio 2019 (on Windows 10), I have run into a bit of a problem, that I think is just bad design. I want to only redirect the stdin from a file so I don't have to type those values every time I manually test the program. (Nope, I haven't learned how to do unit testing in VS yet, and I don't want to have to bother with it at this point in my learning.) But, I still want the output to go to the stdout and show up in the command line window. (Yup, I'm a relative beginner in C++, but I got a 4.0 in my CS major and was a network manager for 12 years (decades ago), so I know how to follow instructions.)
Anyway, when I enter the appropriate command line options into the "Project Properties -> Configuration Properties -> Debugging -> Command Arguments" field, and run the program, the command line window only opens briefly, doesn't display anything, then closes.
I have confirmed that I have the correct command line option entered by also entering the command line option to also redirect stdout to a different file, and everything works. I even use Notepad++ to edit my text files, so it will ask me if I want to reload the changed output file, but that introduces a few clicks that I don't want to do every time. I want to just run the program from within VS 2019, look at the output in the command line window that pops up, then press any key to make it go away and move on.
I have tried adding "cmd /k" to the end of the command line (also "cmd /K" and with and without quotes) but that doesn't help either. I'm pretty sure that is something that only works in DOS batch files anyway. (And no, "pause" wouldn't work because it is a separate command that you put on a separate line in a DOS batch file.) I even thought about using a Build Event or a Custom Build Step, but those occur during the build, not as part of or at the end of actually executing the command for debugging.
So, I seem to be kinda stuck on this one thing. Granted, it is just an inconvenience, but seriously, IDEs are supposed to remove the inconveniences, not add them.

2021.12.07 22:27 NorthFlat Have you ever felt like you met “the one” and then lost her/him. How long did it take for you to get over them?

Obviously there is always more fish in the sea, but was just wondering how people felt. I have on and off dated throughout my life, but I dated a girl for around 4-5 months that I thought had a serious chance of being a life partner. She wasn’t ready for a serious relationship so I walked away. For some reason I held onto hope she would change her mind and reached out two months later, but she wasn’t interested to meet up. I am moving on, but I was curious if people still held feelings for “the one that got away” long after. It’s been 3 months and I still do unfortunately.

2021.12.07 22:27 Prace_Ace How do I explain that magic suddenly exists in just a few parts in my world?

In most Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Sci-Fantasy settings, magic is something that just exists since forever.
In my world however, the existence of magic is a new phenomenon that started the equivalent of 4 years ago, is mostly unexplored by the world's inhabitants and yet has had a massive impact to some areas already. In most parts, however, the influence is basically non-existing and those in positions of power wants to keep it that way while also preventing the general public from knowing about it.
How do I explain that magic is suddenly something that exists, that it's a global phenomenon in multiple areas but not universally wide-spread
